The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. It transports fluid from tissues back to the bloodstream via a series of vessels called lymphatic vessels.
There are two primary functions of the lymphatic system:
To maintain fluid balance within your body by collecting excess fluid (fluid that’s not needed) and returning it to your bloodstream for elimination through your kidneys or lungs;
To protect you from infections by carrying white blood cells to sites where they can fight off invaders.
The lymph system doesn’t have its own pump like your heart, so it relies on other parts of the body to help keep it moving. When the lymphatic system is compromised or not working effectively, it can lead to swelling, water retention, lowered immunity, illness and sluggishness.
Lymphatic drainage massage works to support the lymphatic system by encourage lymph flow back to the lymph nodes.
It is a very gentle, non-invasive form of massage that many people find surprisingly relaxing. It is often used after surgery to help with reducing swelling and inflammation.
