Sports Massage

What is it?

Sports massage focuses on areas of the body that are often either overworked or underworked, which can lead to tension, trauma and pain.

Unlike other forms of massage which tend to focus on relaxation, sports massage is used to release areas of tension, release adhesions in the muscles and realign the muscle fibres which results in the muscles working far more effectively.

Sports massage can help to unlock tight muscles, decrease scar tissue and improve range of motion at the joints due to fewer muscular restrictions.

Who is it for?

Despite the name, sports massage isn’t just for athletes or people who do sports. Although it plays a really important role in any athlete’s self-care program, its also equally useful for people with more sedentary lifestyles.

Excessive hours spent sitting in a chair can lead to tight muscles, weak ‘switch off’ muscle, lack of mobility and ultimately, pain and dysfunction.

Many professions involve frequent repetitive movements e.g. building, gardening, driving (plus many more), that over time can lead to dysfunction and injury if not addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

No! I’ll be the first to admit that the names are rather misleading. Both sports massage and sports therapy are suitable for all people regardless or whether you are an Olympian or the world’s greatest couch potato.

Sports massage is just one of the techniques used within the sports therapy. Other techniques include electrotherapy, muscle energy techniques, exercise therapy and rehabilitation, acupuncture and myofascial release.

Sports massage is ideal for people who need some assistance in removing tension and stress from within the body to keep it working at it’s best.

If you have any specific aches, pains or injuries, I would suggest booking in for a sports therapy session/course of sessions. After this, once the issue is resolved, you can optionally switch to regular sports massage maintenance treatments.

This depends entirely upon your current circumstances. Its not uncommon to feel a whole lot better after one session, but realistically, its likely to take more than one 60 minute session to undo the past 10 years of bad posture – or that shoulder issue that’s been bothering you since 1998!

In order to really feel the benefits of massage, it need to be done regularly and consistently. I usually recommend about once per month – but can be more or less than that. Regular sessions also help to prevent injuries from occurring, boost the benefits of the session, improve your overall wellbeing and ensure that you are practicing regular self-care.

Sessions can be booked individually or you can purchase packages to help save money or spread the cost.

For sports massage and sports therapy, its advisable to wear shorts and a vest (for ladies) to your appointment. This means you can move around comfortably and I can get a good look at your posture while standing or moving. There are facilities for you to change at the clinic.

Some people are under the illusion that sports massage must hurt in order to be effective, but this really isn’t the truth. It’s fair to say that there may be some discomfort during your sessions – particularly in any areas of your body that have been holding on to tension. But it should NOT be solely a painful experience.

Similarly, it is not uncommon to have some mild bruising after a sports massage, especially if we have particularly troublesome areas that require deep work. Its is NOT however, normal to always be left with bruising throughout the body as a result of sports (or any) massage. We are not in the business of torture – bruising is a sign of trauma within the body. As therapists, our job is to help your body to heal and recover to its optimal function. If your therapist is of the mind that pain and bruising are signs of a good treatment, it may be time to move on!
